In the performance of Hedda Gabler, there are many more characters than in Henrik Ibsen's famous play. These are not only the people the main characters meet, nor just their random or not-so-random acquaintances; they are also the ones mentioned in the play but usually not appearing on stage. An important character in the performance is the city itself – a modern large city, the capital of the country where the dramatic events unfold. Most of Ibsen’s great plays are intimate stories whose action takes place within the walls of rooms. But the great Norwegian primarily writes about society, about the social fabric, addressing its most important issues through specific family examples. In Timofey Kulyabin’s performance, it is precisely the city and society that will become the most important participants in the action. Another key "character" here is contemporary art. It is both a sphere of activity for most of the characters, their modern business, a subject of their research and fantasies, and even a way of life. And – as in the case of the main character – it is a powerful personal gesture of protest, the price of which is, in fact, life itself.
