Stephen Sondheim, a brilliant reformer, composer, lyricist and dramatist, defined his Company as a ‘concept musical’. The original Broadway production ran for over 700 performances and won six Tony Awards in several categories.
The story unfolds in latter-day New York, revolving around Robert, a single man hesitant about what matters most: partying with friends or committing himself to someone for the rest of his life. The five married couples who are his best friends ask themselves the same questions, answering both unexpectedly and sincerely.
„This is a project dealing with dreamers, adventurers and two directors with a permissible, but indispensable dose of folly“, director: Mihail Petrov said. „Life is like a variety show: the starting point, the scenic environment and the backdrop against which the events in our performance unfold. We are not judgemental of the characters for they are a product of their time. These are the realities of life we have created: replete with irresponsibility, frivolity, unceremoniousness. Still, all this is presented with a lot of humour, irony, self-mockery, hope and expectation for something better laying in store for us! In an open conventional form, by using all possible devices of music and drama, we achieve this effect, which I would define as a total theatre. We’ve got to spread our wings now and fly off!
