Someone is Going to Come is one of the most popular plays by Nobel Laureate Jon Fosse. A man and a woman try to hide from the outside world in a remote house among the fjords. Yet even there they find no peace - the deep-seated fear that "someone is going to come" breeds great tension. Sexual attraction and jealousy mix with a sense of а threatening reality beyond escape.
The play is a blueprint of Fosse's poetic style. In the suspense-filled atmosphere of pauses and repetitions, new meanings are found for simple phrases and the very absurdity of the idea of isolating oneself from everyone is revealed. The silence is loaded with a sense of deadlock and dread that haunts, in one way or another, every loving couple who has believed in a heaven without the hell of others. Funny moments of black comedy flavor arise at the appearance of the Third Man, whom each of them fleshes out in different ways.
The play's characters are as concrete as they are archetypal, and the underwater themes and meanings are saturated with deep insight into the existential nature of being. The play analyses pain and old age - the very things that hurt, but also add flavour to everyday life. The Scandinavian landscape is an active element that provokes the viewer to join in the game of life and death.
Fosse, the most recognisable voice of contemporary Scandinavian theatre today, will be presented for the first time to the Sofia audience. The creative team of the production looks into the experimental nature of the play and discovers the common in the "specificity of the unknown."
The production "Someone is Going to Come" is part of the "Theatre+" Programme.
