The winner of the European theater award “Premio” for 2017, the internationally renowned Slovenian director, Jernej Lorenci, is working on his new original work “Orpheus” for the stage of the “Ivan Vazov” National Theatre .
At the core of the production lies the ancient myth of Orpheus and Euridice. It is naturally reimagined and recreated through humanity’s modern reflexivity and senses, which face numerous existential problems: war as a permanent state of being for humanity. A condition, which mobilizes, but dissipates its creative energy; oblivion and the (self)deceptions, which we voluntarily fall for in an attempt to escape the truth; the loneliness of creative people as a sought-after and upheld privilege; the strength of love in its metaphysical and mystical forms.
Why does Orpheus descend into the underworld? Where does he actually descend to – in hell, among people, to Euridice or to his own fears and illusions? Why does he break the prophecy, why does he turn around to gaze at Euridice knowing full well that this act will be his doom?
